Final Crit

/

Voila- I felt good about the feedback I got, there was nothing HUGELY wrong with anything by the sounds of things and I was pleased with the amount of work I had to show.  It just about pulling it all together and presenting it as best I can now.

Crit preparations

/

I did a quick print out to see what the recipe book spreads looked like on coloured stock for the crit. I think it will work well.

This crit went well.  I had good feedback in the way that it was picky.  This was a good sign because it gave me an impression that there weren't too many large errors and mistakes.  I still have ALOT to do but I don't feel too far of track.

I do need to change the signage as I was advised not to involve food with toilets and to use google eyes instead of printed eyes onto the teeth range.

Thinking about the wrapping paper brief

/

Making it about producing papers for 1-10 year olds as a set of 10 might not be such a good idea.  I spoke to Mark about it and he pointed out how there is no context to it which makes it different to existing papers.

So I thought I should strip this back and think about where I want to show where my wrapping paper could go.  I have always admired the papers in Urban Outfitters and have a contact to send some to if I i=did them.  That is why I have decided to use their products as the element which differentiates me from the rest of their wrapping paper stock by making paper to work directly with their products to make the 'gift' more of a wholesome package.

For example.

They have a few categories already in place such as gadgets, electronics, home-ware, stationary etc.  If I used these categories, they are abstract enough to have some fun with them but I could included some of their products to tie it togthether as a thought out range made specifically for UO and only UO.

EPIPHANY

/

This has shaken things up.  I made these for my nephew's 1st Birthday.  It took me an afternoon if that and I really enjoyed it.

However, when I think about how long the crufts gift wrap brief is taking me it makes me cross and confused.  I think that this is way better than any of the ones I've made so far for Crufts and it took me a fraction of the time.

SO, I am going to re write my brief to give the same deliverables but for a different audience that isn't restricting me from doing what I want to do.
Crit told me to make the eyes friendlier.

A practice which spread onto the start of the fold out..

CRIT

I went into that crit pretty stuck with all of my briefs.  I feel a lot better now in the way that I need to just be bold with the first stages of all of my briefs and the problems afterwards would be solved.

The takeaway proposal went down well and the worry I had of a burger representing a drink wasn't shared.

The recipe collaboration made me the most excited.  I realised that we needed to go either way, ie REALLY wacky or samey and sellable.  So there are a few new elements Iw ant to add content wise like a glossary of crazy equipment needed like helicopters and harpoons..

The Colgate brief was the most worrying.  Iw as advised to steer away from COlgate which I didn't really want to do as I hate re branding something that already exists so strongly.  I need to crack on and produce a wackier net and think outside the box for packaging shapes, however I do need to bare in mind the store layout and how he products will be displayed.  Will they work together through the characters?

CRIT AFTERMATH

/

I felt happy with the amount of work I had produced judging by the space on the table however, this doesn't mean that the work itself was good.  I was left feeling confident about my briefs, it was in agreement that they were giving me what I wanted.

As regard the skill of what I had done so far, mixed reviews which was good.  The dental care feedback was positive and the imagery for GBk was good but the menu was rushed and let it down.  I completely agree.  I ran away with the format of a large news print sheet without trailing other things and ended up with a pain stakingly long winded clumsy chart.  I am looking forward to going back and researching other possibilities.

The crufts brief excited Lorenzo the most.  However, I am worried that I won't be able to produce what I have in my head.  It could be great I don;t want to let it down.  I need to leave the twee and go back to basics.

I was also told to be more careful with the stroke of drawing I use,  A really valid point, it can transform the whole drawing.
