Brief 5 Wrapping Paper Final Boards
& design development

/

(latest Hallmark development on disk)

Summary

/

This brief was probably the hardest of them all.  If it wasn't for my placement I probably would have discontinued it.  It proved to be a massive downer on my confidence and was infecting the attitude I had on my other briefs.  It took me a long time to take off as I couldn't get the Crufts wrapping paper range to kick off. I'm still disappointed that this didn't work as the concept was there using the categories to make humorous pattern designs.  After it moved onto a range of wrapping paper for Urban Outfitters-using their gift range and failed again I really hit rock bottom.

However, my placement allowed me to relax a little and just produce imagery with no pressure to be for a certain pattern etc.  I went on to design a multitude of different possible ranges and really enjoyed doing so.  My favourites would be the character cards as well as the more traditional water colour cards with the script hand drawn type.  They sum me up in  a nit shell in the way that I can draw for different audiences.

Because of this late take off I don't think I pushed the brief very well at all.  I was happy to keep it as a smaller brief but there turned out to be so much scope for improvement and involvement of more products rather than just artwork.  However it has provided a fill for a hole in my portfolio and perhaps I will re visit it to do it up in to a fuller range and re visit the christmas tree decoration idea.

I NEED MORE TIME TO MAKE CHRISTMAS CRACKERS !!

/

I'm going to try and find time tomorrow in between screen printing my bags for my recipe brief to make some crackers or at least one!  I wish I had thought of this earlier.  This can go on and on but I need to figure out where to stop.

ANOTHER PROCESS LEARNT!

/

I was so pleased to finally use the digital fabric printer.  I printed my colgate toys as well as having a brain wave and printed some of my christmas characters to make some tree decorations!

POPLIN fabric.  It was great I want to do more!

new direction

/

As of today, I have decided to use my experience from my placement at Hallmark to continue with this brief.  So up to now the rest of this brief is off line for copyright issues.

You'll find artworks on disk and in my project file as well as presentation boards.

UO ORNAMENTS CONT.

Thinking about the first theme of ornaments as a major part of UO gift products.

By drawing a mixture of their own products and he stereotype a strong theme of nostalgic ornaments could come across to involve the gift you are giving without giving it away completely.

Thinking about the wrapping paper brief

/

Making it about producing papers for 1-10 year olds as a set of 10 might not be such a good idea.  I spoke to Mark about it and he pointed out how there is no context to it which makes it different to existing papers.

So I thought I should strip this back and think about where I want to show where my wrapping paper could go.  I have always admired the papers in Urban Outfitters and have a contact to send some to if I i=did them.  That is why I have decided to use their products as the element which differentiates me from the rest of their wrapping paper stock by making paper to work directly with their products to make the 'gift' more of a wholesome package.

For example.

They have a few categories already in place such as gadgets, electronics, home-ware, stationary etc.  If I used these categories, they are abstract enough to have some fun with them but I could included some of their products to tie it togthether as a thought out range made specifically for UO and only UO.

Working Dogs

Why not put them where they work on a map. I need to start using the back space properly. By using the same colouring style the range can remain consistent in that way-but it gives me space to create a variety of more engaging image rather than just constant repat pattern.

thinking about colour

/

after having a look at the on trend 2/3 colour based books.  I thought I would do some incredibly quick colour exercises.  This needs to be woken up and become more happy and mental.  Some of these are rank and DO NOT work but some have potential..

BUT, how will I make this work across the range of dog breed papers?
